Cities and Urban Practices
Abstract
The urban event and its architectural manifestations are not isolated phenomena detached from their socio-cultural contexts. Rather, they reflect crucial aspects of complex relationships with dominant urban trends and the tensions they impose on the environment and its agents, viewed as subjects of dwelling and lived experience. Hence, the social sciences and humanities are vital for understanding this reality and the condition of the Algerian individual.
The spatial dimension of the urban event plays a pivotal role in establishing individual and collective equilibria. Through the processes of appropriation and interaction, it engenders non-neutral patterns shaped by cultural identities and expressed through the historical dimensions of its possession. This influence is discernible in the perceptions and representations that actors hold regarding urbanism and its various forms. From this standpoint, the importance of engaging with Jacques Berque’s anthropological work on Maghreb societies becomes evident. Berque explored the Maghreb urban space by highlighting its "strained" significations related to social, communal, and tribal structures. The dichotomy he established between "the City" (Médina) and "the Countryside" (Bled) elucidates the features of continuity, tension, or overlap between two distinct urban contexts.
