Have the former colonies, foremost among them Algeria, entered a new phase in their history in which the former colonial powers—both governmental and partisan—play a leading role in reshaping the cultures of these peoples to align them with Western concepts and laws in the name of globalisation and humanism?
Since the beginning of the second millennium, the world has witnessed a strong resurgence of interest in history in a number of European countries (France, and before that Britain and Italy) and Asian countries (Japan). However, it is noteworthy that this revival was not a call to regard history as both a national and a human heritage, capable of contributing to rapprochement between peoples and nations and healing the wounds of the recent and distant past in the service of world peace and the well-being of the peoples of the globe.
Numerous indicators suggest that this call runs completely counter to the right of peoples to their history and national culture. Is the world facing a new kind of pre-emptive war whose apparent aims are:
• to counter voices calling for the criminalisation of colonialism and the payment of reparations,
• and those eager to restore their sovereignty by demanding the return of their heritage, plundered throughout the dark colonial eras.
History has been, and remains, one of the cornerstones of the doctrine of the French colonial system, forming its vital backbone. In the French lexicon, the word ‘history’ is synonymous with several phrases that have emerged in different eras, all of which glorify France’s heroic past. The phrase ‘the French Empire’, which signifies power and grandeur, is synonymous with the classic triad of ‘France–the Republic–the Nation’ and the pairs ‘Historical France’ and ‘France of Liberty’, as well as ‘Republic–Civilisation’; to these, the concept of ‘French values’ has been added for more than two decades.

Permanent Researcher at the Center for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (CRASC) in Oran, and Research Professor, Doctor in Modern and Contemporary History. She is interested in the history of the national movement and the Algerian revolution, as well as questions of memory, through her participation in several research projects within the institution, the most significant being the project: Memory and Social Change in Algeria in the Dominant Discourse among Categories of Youth (2011-2018).
She is currently working on themes related to memory and sites of memory, and is also a member of a project on the actors of the national movement in Algeria and their trajectories. Furthermore, she has published several articles on memory and history among youth.
