The Sahara, as an important socio-anthropological space, has always been of interest to researchers at CRASC. Thus, the transformations underway within this vast desert, the ways in which local societies adapt to a specific natural environment, the territorial organization of the Sahara, and the new administrative structures of populations and territories are all issues that have attracted the attention of CRASC researchers. Agriculture and agricultural dynamics, oasis spaces, and the various desertification policies are also research topics on which CRASC researchers and faculty have worked. In this regard, research projects have been conducted within the institution to analyze various development and land-use planning policies, the organization of Saharan space and its urbanization, the relationships between local populations and the surrounding oasis environment, the history of the formation of the Ksar, its settlement, its landscape and social transformations, migration and mobility, borders, Saharan communities, their ways of life, forms of solidarity among local communities, tangible and intangible heritage, places of knowledge, culture and religion, architectural know-how, and the political and commercial spaces that form a local network across the Sahara. These are the questions that can open avenues for research and encourage further work to better understand Saharan society, economy, and space.
Therefore, this scientific research seminar, open to the public and dedicated to the late Abdallah Messahel, aims to be a scientific meeting on the challenges facing the Sahara and how these challenges have been addressed by research at the CRASC. This is also an opportunity and an invitation to reflect on and renew the debate surrounding this region in light of the current situation and geopolitical challenges, as well as the new political, economic, and social context.
