Scientific event

As one of the latest products of the historical and social sciences in France and in the post-colonial era, and like ethnography, colonial history, ancient history, geography, sociology, law, linguistics, and others, historical demography was unable to develop within the context of colonial academic research in Algeria.

In 2013, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Société de Démographie Historique (Society for Historical Demography) in 1953 by its founder, Marcel Reinhard (1899-1973), we attempted to include a research project at the Centre for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (CRASC), focusing on the intersection of historical demography and anthropology through the theme of "Kinship, families, alliances, and genealogies."

From this perspective, and in order to establish a new scientific field defined within its epistemological and methodological framework, we will attempt, through this presentation, to highlight the necessity of consolidating the initial foundations of "Demo-anthropology" as a multidisciplinary crossroads linking demography, history, and anthropology, as is the case with other successful intersections that have included demo-geography, ethno-history, and others.
