Abstract
The memory of Algeria's War of National Liberation (1954-1962) is the subject of commemorative practices staged by state apparatuses seeking to establish a consensus around a national narrative. This memorial edifice is rivalled by village initiatives that highlight forms of secularization and redefinition of identity, notably through styles of war memorials that depart from the accepted norm but do not break with the national imaginary. This conference is based on ethnographic material collected in several villages in Kabylia. It proposes a reflection on the stakes of collective memory through the rites of commemoration and the places of memory where they take place.
