abstract

The work Extraordinary Journeys and Pleasant Stories by Mohamed Ibn Ahmed Abu Ras El Nacer constitutes a major historical source for the study of scientific, cultural, and social life in Algeria during the Ottoman period. Through a narrative that intertwines biography, history, and travel literature, the author reports information about scholars, cities, and circles of knowledge he encountered during his journeys across the Maghreb and the Mashreq. The book also highlights the role of zaouïas and educational institutions in disseminating knowledge and shaping intellectual elites. Moreover, it reveals the existence of extensive scholarly exchange networks linking Algeria to the principal cultural centers of the Muslim world. In 2005, Mohamed Ghalem edited and annotated this manuscript within the framework of the project Places of Knowledge, Places of Power: The City, conducted by CRASC under the National Research Program Population and Society. This edition contributed to the valorization and dissemination of this fundamental source among researchers interested in the social and cultural history of Algeria.
