abstract
The work Foreign Documentary Sources. Algeria: History and Society – Another Perspective, coordinated by Ahmed Abi-Ayad, constitutes a scientific contribution to the exploration of foreign sources relating to Algerian history and society through archives and testimonies preserved both in Algeria and abroad. It highlights the importance of foreign documents as complementary sources that enable a rereading of Algeria’s history from multiple perspectives, drawing in particular on the accounts of travelers, captives, diplomats, and foreign historians.
The publication also addresses questions of representations and reciprocal images between Algeria and Europe, as well as the political, commercial, and cultural relations that developed between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries (XVIth - XIXth). In this respect, it contributes to making known the foreign documentary heritage relating to Algeria and underscores its methodological value for renewing historical research and broadening the perspectives for studying Algerian society in both its local and international dimensions.
