abstract
Population aging is a relatively recent phenomenon. Indeed, demographic aging in wealthy countries was not even on the agenda of the Bucharest Conference in 1974 (Th. Eggerickx and D. Tabutin, 2001). P. Laslett (1999), in his article “The Slow Emergence of the Third Age”, argues that it was only from the 1980s onward that aging began to be seriously considered. For a long time, the issue attracted little interest among demographers, with a few notable exceptions such as Alfred Sauvy, Paul Paillat, and Patrice Bourdelais, while research was largely left to geriatric specialists, who approached it from a perspective distinct from that of demography. The baby boom of the 1950s and 1960s significantly slowed the progression of aging, thereby delaying awareness of this phenomenon….
