abstract

To introduce this research, we outline the reasons that led the Centre for Research in Applied Economics for Development to undertake a study on the theme of “the family in Algeria.” The primary motivations are: the recognition that the family is simultaneously undergoing change while ensuring social continuity; the fragility of available data due to the absence of national-scale studies on the family in recent decades, leaving room for unverified hypotheses and speculative claims; and the need to link demographic behaviors with family structures, acknowledging that demographic dynamics are shaped by social conditions. These considerations explain the spontaneous composition of a multidisciplinary research team demographers, statisticians, sociologists, and anthropologists whose methodology rests on a plural approach. To move beyond this relative state of ignorance, the researchers propose initial hypotheses (“entries”) to better understand both transformations and continuities within Algerian families……
