What Forms of Institutional Care Are Provided?

abstract
Among the various fields of investigation concerning children and adolescents, that of abandoned, assisted, or judicially supervised childhood remains one that combines psychological, social, legal, religious, and political dimensions. In Algeria, the challenges facing children are largely shaped by the profound transformations the country has undergone. Over the past two decades, Algeria has experienced massive upheavals that disrupted its socio-political, economic, social, and spatial stability. The “Black Decade” not only caused thousands of deaths, serious injuries, and homelessness, but also led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people, forced by fear or direct threats to leave their homes and resettle in urban peripheries. These areas saw their populations multiply without adequate resources in employment, housing, healthcare, or security. Such instability deepened family vulnerability and precariousness, pushing increasing numbers of children into the streets, left to fend for themselves or exploited by unscrupulous individuals
