The volume Preschool Education in Algeria: Current Status and Future Prospects, edited by Nouria Benghabrit-Remaoun and published by the Centre for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (CRASC) in 2005, examines the state of preschool education in Algeria and the challenges associated with its development. It demonstrates that preschool education plays a crucial role in children’s socialization and preparation for formal schooling, yet remains insufficiently structured and unevenly developed across the country. The system is characterized by a plurality of stakeholders - including public, private, and municipal providers - and by the absence of a unified policy framework, resulting in significant disparities in terms of access and quality.
The author also highlights the limitations of existing pedagogical practices and the lack of specialized training among educational personnel. Finally, the volume advocates for the universalization of preschool education, its professionalization, and its integration into a coherent national strategy aimed at reducing inequalities and improving the quality of education from early childhood onward.
