abstract

The work Names and Names… Civil Status and Anthroponymy in Algeria, coordinated by Farid Benramdane, constitutes one of the scientific studies produced within the framework of the research project Naming and the Mental Representations of Nomination (Toponyms and Anthroponyms) in Algeria. It seeks to explore the linguistic, social, and cultural dimensions of naming within Algerian society. This publication is situated within the field of onomastic studies, which analyze names as markers of both individual and collective identity, but also as vectors of the historical and symbolic memory of society. It addresses the issue of anthroponyms and their relationship to civil status through the study of naming practices, their historical transformations, and the influence of cultural, religious, linguistic, and administrative factors on the constitution of the Algerian anthroponymic repertoire. The study also highlights the social representations underlying the choice and transmission of names, as well as their role in expressing belonging, values, and symbolic references within society. In this respect, the work contributes to deepening scientific knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the construction of social and cultural identity, and stands as an important reference for researchers in social anthropology, linguistics, cultural sociology, and studies of intangible heritage in Algeria.
