abstract

This sourcebook, stemming from the work carried out within the National Research Program (PNR) project "Contributions of the History of Science to the Didactics of Mathematics and Biology," under the direction of Professor Djebbar, is motivated by the need to address certain questions from our science teaching colleagues: "Can science be taught without considering its history?" and "Does the rapid evolution of scientific knowledge and teacher curricula require teachers not only to have knowledge of the discipline but also, and above all, of its history?" This sourcebook builds upon the numerous studies that have demonstrated that the history of science (HS) can indeed make a significant contribution to science education by helping us understand how: societies and their ways of thinking developed, modern rationalities were constructed, and the divide between knowledge and beliefs emerged; science and technology have evolved over time, what they have become today, what questions they have answered, and how they did so.
