abstract

The PNR project “Agropastoral Development and Sustainable Community Growth in the Wetland of Ain Skhouna (Wilaya of Saida)” pursued two main objectives: rehabilitating the wetland through rational management of water, vegetation, and soils, and promoting cattle breeding and family-based crafts. The development of wetlands and arid steppes bordering the Chott Ech Chergui relied primarily on cartographic knowledge of the territory, in line with Marcel Cote’s assertion that land-use planning is an indispensable dimension of development. Accordingly, cartography and landscape studies became central to the project. Nine indicators were adopted to evaluate its relevance, ranging from thematic mapping (vegetation, soils, fertility) and hydrological management to phytosociological analysis, introduction of new forage species, soil fertility studies, socio-anthropological surveys, qualitative interviews on entrepreneurship, and experimental initiatives in cattle breeding and household crafts
