abstract

This dictionary-style work is the result of a collaborative effort by some 40 Algerian and Tunisian researchers. This collaboration was made possible through an international cooperation agreement involving research institutions in both countries. The authors of this dictionary of terms related to public space in the Maghreb were motivated by a desire to highlight concepts commonly used in our societies that foreshadowed the existence of public spaces before the term existed, in the form of arenas, spheres, or places for mediation and negotiation of the public interest. Researchers, most of whom live within Maghreb societies, driven by the urgent need for local appropriation of social science knowledge, sought to visualize areas functioning as public spaces. One can thus refer to the list of entries, numbering 172 with 728 bibliographic references and 680 proper names listed in the index, all linked to places of transition that existed to designate spaces for negotiating coexistence and that, at other times, played the role of arbitrator and conflict resolution, even within marital and family life. It will also be evident that a number of the entries presented here relate to fundamental issues in the existence of contemporary North Africa.
